Apple iOS version on App Store

The iOS version of the TrailAdvisor app is available for free download at:

Import gpx files

You can import gpx files from most devices (gps watches, mobile apps and websites) into the TrailAdvisor app.


Do the following steps:

  1. Download a GPX file to your computer
  2. Send the GPX file from your computer to your mobile device with TrailAdvisor app installed
    • by adding the GPX file to a cloud service e.g. dropbox
    • by sending a mail to your mobile
  3. Open a GPX file from your mobile device.
    • Open directly with TrailAdvisor using "Copy to TrailAdvisor"

    • Open the GPX file and then select "Open in...", choose "Copy to TrailAdvisor"

  4. Name your new route and add the requested information
  5. DONE! Your GPX file is now added as a route in the TrailAdvisor database.

Create a Google earth fly over film

This feature is not integrated in the TrailAdvisor app yet so while you are waiting for this to happen here is some basic guidelines on how to make a trail fly-over on your computer.


  1. Download a GPX file to your computer
  2. Upload your GPX file on http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/ with the output format "Google Earth" selected and click "Map it":

  3. Download the generated KML or KMZ file and open it with the Google Earth Pro application (free download at http://www.google.com/earth/download/gep/agree.html):

  4. In Google Earth Pro, open the "Tracks" folder of your imported trail and mark the line item with the trail name:

  5. Create a tour by selecting the "Play Tour" icon below Image 11
  6. When the tour is completed save the tour:

  7. Finally select the top folder of your trail import (top level under My Places) and select Tools -> Movie Maker:

  8. In the Movie Maker you select the saved tour that you want to record. In the final step "Create Movie" there are a number of settings that you might need play around with to get it right for your computer and needs.

Note: It's takes a few tries to get it right but once you get the hang of it it's a lot of fun!
